In industrial adhesive processing, activators are used to speed up curing. Many of these products have so far contained DMPT (N,N-Dimethyl-p-toluidine), which will be subject to stricter REACH regulations starting September 1, 2025. Why is DMPT problematic?
DMPT (N,N-Dimethyl-p-toluidine) has been used for many years as a reactive component in adhesive systems. However, the substance poses significant health and regulatory risks—for both users and companies.
Carcinogenic (CMR substance, Category 1B)
According to European chemical regulations, DMPT is classified as carcinogenic. Being categorized as a CMR substance (carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction) means that even low concentrations of the substance can cause long-term health damage.
Irritates skin, eyes, and respiratory tract
Direct contact with DMPT, such as handling adhesive components without adequate protection, can cause acute irritation of the mucous membranes, skin, or eyes. Inhaling vapors also poses a serious risk, especially in poorly ventilated production areas.
Strict REACH regulation effective from 01.09.2025
From this date onward, DMPT will be subject to stricter legal regulations. The substance may then only be used under strict conditions in commercial and industrial settings. For many companies, this means additional testing requirements, updated safety training, and potential restrictions in procurement.
Increased effort for training and documentation
Companies that continue to use products containing DMPT are required to provide comprehensive training, implement special protective measures, and maintain extended documentation. This results in additional organizational and financial efforts, especially regarding audits, workplace safety, and product liability.
